There’s a part of me that still doesn’t know how to feel about Liverpool’s season. Was it a good season? Or a terrible one?
Let’s begin Liverpool 2025 season analysis
After Jurgen Klopp announced he would be stepping down, many in the football world saw it as the beginning of the end for one of the greatest Premier League sides in recent history—just behind Manchester City, who in my opinion are the greatest Premier League team of all time. Klopp’s successor was revealed to be Arne Slot, a name not many were familiar with. It came as a surprise to most, including me.
Slot had done great things at Feyenoord—winning the Eredivisie in 2022/23 and the KNVB Cup in 2023/24. Not a bad resume at all, but taking over at Liverpool? That’s a whole different level. And honestly, even I doubted him at first. He made only two signings: Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili, both set to join the club in the summer.
Liverpool kicked off the season with a 2–1 win over Wolves, with goals from Konaté and Salah. From that moment on, they didn’t look back. They shocked everyone—winning 17 matches and drawing 4. The football world started whispering about a possible quadruple. Liverpool were topping their Champions League group. Salah was magical. Van Dijk was solid as ever. It looked like Liverpool might actually win it all.
But then, the dream started slipping.
The first big blow came when Liverpool lost 1–0 to Championship side Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup—yes, a team fighting relegation. That ended hopes of the quadruple and shifted focus to a treble: the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup.
They beat Tottenham 4–1 on aggregate to book a place in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle. And then came the Champions League clash against PSG—France’s best team and a serious test of Liverpool’s treble credentials.
In the first leg, Liverpool scraped an undeserved win, with PSG clearly being the better team. But in the second leg, PSG came back strong and won on penalties. Painful, but fair. As if that wasn’t enough, they went on to lose the Carabao Cup final 2–1 to Newcastle. Even Jamie Carragher couldn’t hide his disappointment—saying on air that it was a “disgrace” for Liverpool to be outplayed like that.
In two weeks, they went from chasing a treble… to only being in the title race.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Winning the Premier League—if they manage it—is still a big achievement. But given how incredibly strong Liverpool started, the expectations were sky-high. Salah was a force, delivering goals and assists in double digits. He was even in the Ballon d’Or conversation. Van Dijk? Just being Van Dijk. Rock solid.
But still, something feels off.
In the end of this Liverpool 2025 season analysis, I think Liverpool were simply victims of their own success. The bar they set was so high, anything less than a treble felt like failure. So I ask again:
Was this a good season or a bad one? And is Arne Slot actually overperforming?
